I would suspect that one assumes a perfect mental state as normal. However a boring stasis focused on material reality could be less equipped for the future. What if seeing in infrared were advantageous? Hearing voices could actually be developing telepathy. Madness might be entropic, disorder, but this might lead to a higher mental order. One talks of the mad genius.
