Now let's go way back. In Genesis God told Adam as punishment for his sin he would be cast out of the garden of Eden and live by the sweat of his brow. We got all this technology and could likely live absolutely work free if we had lowered expectations. But everybody wants more and competes. A coat, pants, pot, fridge would last many years. Cars were for the few, rich and travel as well. Ads produced demand, increased consumption to absorb higher production. If we lived at consumption of 100 years or so ago and had a 1 billion population we could work 10 hour weeks, all have free housing. Oil, coal, gas could last ten thousand years not one or two centuries.
