My wife was reading to me about the Leningrad blockade of WWII inclusive eating pets, cannibalism mass starvation. During the revolution the city was blockade by the communists and a million died as well. No media attention back then. I just read a Metro trilogy about St. Petersburg and the post apocalyptic would obviously never have been possible without the very real history of the city as a backdrop.
