As my Irish descendants were very much enslaved by my English ones for hundreds of years and had neither of them much if any to do with this US American slavery I find the narrow historical focus in for example my AP US historyin high school myopic. One could also go into homosexual history in old Greece, middle Ages Europe, Japan in Babylon, etc. Scientists in astronomy or biology or archaeo- anthropology go parsecs or millions of years to the most obscure roots of all things but once people touch certain topics all becomes taboo. We have open our minds to be more flexible. Wars start, civil wars in particular, by building up a narrative concerning the coinhabitants of the country with the possible motive of ethnic cleansing or genocide. Only a deeper cultural understanding of our mutual pasts can free us from our current misconceptions and hatreds used to fuel a bonfire of war.
