I have been under more work stress as corona leaves us short of staff but as they say 'When the going gets tough the tough get going'. I have noticed that for example when one starts up on a jogging routine that heart, lungs gets used to a different nreathig rate, deeper more full. This is similar with work. I am under more time pressure, no breaks, psychologically more stressed, alone and I still keep up my sport and emotional commiitments. So my body raises my game, helping me by giving me a 'second wind'. I breathe deep and constantly, using my whole lungs. Now I am less nervous, calm. I even woke up after 6 1/2 hours sleep still beathing deeply, fully rested. Yoga has increased lung capacity and deep stretches brings that cspacity of heart, lungs down deep into tissues. Only difficulty is feeling less intemtly on an energetic level. I think that will return. It comes in phases with my energy body. I feel more chi, prana, kundalini in my heart, etc intensely and this lasts several weeks at a certain level until my chakras overload. Several weeks ago I complained of head and heart pains here in a post. Then I let this energy flow elsewhere in my body, sexual chakra for example. Now I have just freaked out generally yesterday due to energy overload and overwork and am learning to come to a whole new level. I presume that, as I have noticed, this gives me a certain rational distance before I start filling up my energy body at a deeper level again towards those I love. It is interesting to note these step like stages of development forced on me by my body. I hope nobody feels distanced as I struggle with the adjustment. I find it fascinating how growth spurts are an evolutionary spiral. I hope I have someone who can maintain the pace with me and push me to higher acheivement through mutual energy exchange. Benefits of deep breathng
1) Decreases stress, increases calm. When you become stressed or anxious, your brain releases cortisol, the “stress hormone.” By taking deep breaths, your heart rate slows, more oxygen enters our blood stream and ultimately communicates with the brain to relax. Deep breathing also ups your endorphins, the “feel good” chemical.
2) Relieves pain. As stated above, deep breathing triggers the release of endorphins, which not only helps create a feeling ing, but also combats pain.
3) Stimulates the lymphatic system (Detoxifies the body). Breathing releases carbon monoxide, which is important to fully release. Actually, breathing is in charge of 70% of cleansing the body of toxins (the other 30% is through bladder and bowels.) If you do not breathe fully, your body must work overtime to release these toxins.
4) Improves immunity. When your blood is fully oxygenated, it carries and absorbs nutrients and vitamins more efficiently. Essentially, the cleaner the blood, the harder it is for illnesses to stay put in your system.
5) Increases energy. The more oxygen that is in the blood, the better our body functions. It also improves our stamina.
6) Lowers blood pressure. As your muscles relax, this allows your blood vessels to dialate, which improves circulation and lowers blood pressure. Deep breathing also slows and regulates the heart rate, which also helps with lowering your BP.
7) Improves digestion. The more you breathe deep, the more healthier blood flow you will produce, which in turn promotes your organs to function more effectively, including your intestines.
8) Helps support correct posture. Next time you breathe in, notice that you simultaneously lengthen and straighten your spine. In order to take a deep breath in, your lungs take up maximum space, your diaphragm pulls down, so in turn your torso straightens in order for this to be possible
I did my tai chi today and it gave me such a surge in my heart which spread all over my body. I found a video that helps visualize this and below some words of wisdom:
Those who do evil and yet fear that men should learn of it Are, in the midst of evils, still on the road to good. Those who do good and yet want that men should soon learn of it Live within the good, but are truly at nothing other than the foot iniquity.

When you step but lightly through the world, You are but lightly affected by it; But when you pass through events with a deeper tread, Their tricks and schemes are profound. This the gentleman knows Simplicity is better than a show of dexterity. This he knows A rude single-mindedness is better than a distorted show of manners.
***
Those with power, fame, wealth, and extravagance- By not coming close to them a man stays pure. Yet the man who can approach and not be affected is the purest of all. Those who are clever, artful, and full of guile- By not knowing them a man stays high-minded. Yet the man who can know and still not use them is the most high-minded at all.
***
When attacking someone’s faults Do not be too severe. You need to consider how well he will weather what he hears. When teaching someone by showing him what is good, Do not pass certain heights, But hit upon what he should be able to follow.

Reading books but not seeing the wisdom and intelligence within- This is being slave to paper and print. Being of high rank but not loving the people- This is a thief wearing ceremonial robes. Lecturing on learned subjects but not giving proper respect to putting them into action- This is Zen of the mouth alone. Performing great achievements but giving no thought to the seeds of virtue for the future- This is only flowers blooming and withering tight before your eyes.
Lately I have ben getting regularly up earlier, sleeping less. After several weeks or more of being a bit more excitable, blogging, thinking, feeling more I have noticed irritation, lack of general motivation. After waking up today at 5am and going to the toilet, not being able to sleep then checking internet till 6am I rolled over, breathed deeper, stopped my busy thoughts and somehow fell asleep again. I woke up from an interesting dream. My breathing was and remains deeper, relaxing all the stress in my muscles from work and yoga and my thought process is slower, more relaxed. When starting a new and exciting endeavour like blogging, a new job, or finding new friends we can forget to relax, take care of ourselves, particularly in such an exciting crisis like this one. But noone is superman.
Dreamer, you're nothing but a dreamer Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no! I said dreamer, you say you are a dreamer Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no! I said "Far out, - What a day, a year, a life it is!" You know, - Well you know you had it comin' to you, Well now there's not a lot I can do
Dreamer, you stupid little dreamer; So now you put your head in your hands, oh no! I said "Far out, - What a day, a year, a life it is!" You know, - Well you know you had it comin' to you, Well now there's not a lot I can do.
We'll work it out someday
If I could see something You can see anything you want boy I could be someone- You can be anyone, celebrate boy. If I could do something- Well you can do a something, If I could do anything- Well can you do something out of this world?
Take a dream on a Sunday Take a life, take a holiday Take a lie, take a dreamer Dream, dream, dream, dream, dream along...
Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no! I said dreamer, you're nothing but a dreamer Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no! OH NO!
God alone did not create you, my girl –
You are also the creation of men
From the core of their heart
They have endowed you with charm.
With golden threads of similes
Your dress the poet weaves.
To immortalize your image
The painter puts on your face
An ever fresh glow.
So many colours, scents and costumes –
From the seas come pearls
From the mines comes gold
Heaps of flowers come
From the garden in spring
Insects sacrifice their lives
To colour your feet.
With your coyness, your dresses
And with all those trimmings
You keep yourself beyond easy reach
And a burning longing you always ignite –
Your one half is made of flesh and blood
Your other half is the fantasy of our mind
The economy is slowly getting reopened but as I noticed yesterday on our main shopping street and at the post office, masks are everywhere and not just in hospitals, where I work. Prince wrote this song.
Six o'clock already I was just in the middle of a dream I was kissin' Valentino By a crystal blue Italian stream But I can't be late 'Cause then I guess I just won't get paid These are the days When you wish your bed was already made
It's just another manic Monday I wish it was Sunday 'Cause that's my fun day My I don't have to run day It's just another manic Monday
Have to catch an early train Got to be to work by nine And if I had an air-o-plane I still couldn't make it on time 'Cause it takes me so long Just to figure out what I'm gonna wear Blame it on the train But the boss is already there
All of the nights Why did my lover have to pick last night To get down Doesn't it matter That I have to feed the both of us Employment's down He tells me in his bedroom voice C'mon honey, let's go make some noise Time it goes so fast When you're having fun
U2s best album. Songs of varying quality. Nowadays you buy singles online. Whole album listening gives a better feel for a band or artist like reading less famous novels of an author. Sort of gives a more varied look like seeing someone in good and bad moods, you get more accepting.
I want to run - I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside
I want to reach out and touch the flame
Where the streets have no name
I want to feel sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Still building, then burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there I go there with you
It's all I can do
The city's a flood and our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind - trampled in dust
I'll show you a place high on a desert plain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Still building, then burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there I go there with you
It's all I can do
Our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Blown by the wind --
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
I have climbed the highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run - I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of the devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I believe in the kingdom come
Then all the colours will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes, I'm still running
You broke the bonds and you loosed the chains
Carried the cross of my shame
Of my shame
You know I believe it
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for --
With or Without You
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you
With or without you
With or without you
Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live with or without you
And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give
And you give yourself away
My hands are tied - my body bruised
She's got me with nothing to win
And nothing left to lose
And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give
And you give yourself away
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live with or without you
Bullet the Blue Sky
In the howling wind comes a stinging rain
See it driving nails into the souls on the tree of pain
From the firefly, a red orange glow
See the face of fear running scared in the valley below
Bullet the blue sky - bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue - bullet the blue
In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum
Jacob wrestled the angel and the angel was overcome
Plant a demon seed - you raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses - see the flames higher and higher
Bullet the blue sky - bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue - bullet the blue
This guy comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colours of a royal flush
And he's peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down - one hundred, two hundred
And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes
Across the mud huts as the children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street
We take the staircase to the first floor
We turn the key and slowly unlock the door
A man breathes into a saxophone
And through the walls we hear the city groan
Outside it's America - outside it's America
So how does it feel to see the sky ripped open?
To see the rain through a gaping wound?
Pelting the women and children
Who run into the arms of America
Running to Stand Still
And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was lying still
Said I got to do something about where we're going
Step on a steam train
Step out of the driving rain
Maybe run from the darkness in the night
Singing ha la la la di day - ha la la la di day
Sweet the sin
Bitter the taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out
You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice
You know I took the poison from the poison stream
Then I floated out of here
Singing ha la la la di day - ha la la la di day
She runs through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls, stolen from the sea
She is raging - she is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will suffer the needle chill
She is running to stand still
Red Hill Mining Town
From father to son the blood runs thin
See the faces frozen still against the wind
The seam is split - the coal face cracked
The lines are long - there's no going back
Through hands of steel and heart of stone
Our labour day has come and gone
And you leave me holding on
In Red Hill Town, see the lights go down
I'm hanging on
You're all that's left to hold on to
I'm still waiting - I'm hanging on
You're all that's left to hold on to
The glass is cut - the bottle run dry
Our love runs cold in the caverns of the night
We're wounded by fear - injured in doubt
I can lose myself - you I can't live without
Yeah you keep me holding on
In Red Hill Town, see the lights go down
I'm hanging on [etc repeated]
Then we two scorched the earth - set fire to the sky
We stooped so low to reach so high
A link is lost - the chain undone
We wait all day for night to come
And it comes like a hunter, child
I'm hanging on [etc repeated]
Love, slowly stripped away
Love has seen its better day
Hanging on
The lights go out on Red Hill
The lights go down on Red Hill
The lights go down on Red Hill Town
The lights go down on Red Hill
In God's Country
Desert sky
Dream beneath the desert sky
The rivers run, but soon run dry
We need new dreams tonight
Desert rose
Dreamed I saw a desert rose
Dress torn in ribbons and in bows
Like a siren she calls to me
Sleep comes like a drug in God's country
Sad eyes, crooked crosses in God's country
Set me alight
We'll punch a hole right through the night
Everyday the dreamers die
To see what's on the other side
She is liberty
And she comes to rescue me
Hope, faith, her vanity
The greatest gift is gold
Sleep comes like a drug in God's country
Sad eyes, crooked crosses in God's country
Naked flame
She stands with a naked flame
I stand with the sons of Cain
Burned by the fire of love
Burned by the fire of love
Trip Through Your Wires
In the distance she saw me coming down
I was calling out
I was calling out
Still shaking - still in pain
You put me back together again
I was cold and you clothed me honey
I was down and you lifted me honey
Angel - angel or devil
I was thirsty and you wet my lips
You, I'm waiting for you
You, you set my desire
I trip through your wires
I was broken, bent out of shape
I was naked in the clothes you made
My lips were dry - throat like rust
You gave me shelter from the heat and the dust
There's no more water in the well
No more water, water
Angel - angel or devil [etc repeated]
Thunder, thunder on the mountain
There's a rain cloud in the desert sky
In the distance she saw me coming down
I was calling out
I was calling out
One Tree Hill
We turn away to face the cold enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy, love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows, only scars
Carved into stone on the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes
You run like a river to the sea
You run like a river runs to the sea
And in the world a heart of darkness, a fire zone
Where poets speak their heart, then bleed for it
Jara sang - his song a weapon in the hands of one
Whose blood still cries from the ground
It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea
I don't believe in painted roses or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill
We run like a river runs to the sea
We run like a river to the sea
And when it's raining, raining hard
That's when the rain will break my heart
Raining - raining in your heart --
Oh, great ocean - oh, great sea
Run to the ocean - run to the sea
Exit
You know he got the cure, but then he went astray
He used to stay awake to drive the dreams he had away
He wanted to believe in the hands of love
His head it felt heavy as he cut across the land
A dog started crying like a broken hearted man
At the howling wind, the howling wind
He went deeper into black - deeper into white
He could see the stars shine like nails in the night
He felt the healing, healing, healing, healing hands of love
Like the star that is shining from above
He put his hands in the pocket
His finger on the steel
The pistol weighed heavy
His heart he could feel
Was beating, beating, beating
Oh my love - oh my love - oh my love
He saw the hands that build could also pull down
The hands of love
Mothers of the Disappeared
Midnight - our sons and daughters
Were cut down and taken from us
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat
In the wind we hear their laughter
In the rain we see their tears
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat
Night hangs like a prisoner
Stretched over black and blue
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat
In the trees our sons stand naked
Through the walls our daughters cry
See their tears in the rainfall
I read recently that a panel of doctors were warning to lift the lockdown as it was weaking the immune system. Another article cited evidence that muscle activity dxudes a substance 'ecSod' which enhances resistance against the virus. There is also dvidence that adipose(overweight) is a main dnger factor in vulnerability. So fitness must be maintained. How to in lockdown, perhaps in small urban apartments or by rainy weather. Several videos according to taste:
Newmoove online-fitness(german language)
Excellent, intelligent home workout for total fitness which keeps muscle mass high. I was so impressed I printed the text and links.
In today’s video we’ll go through a science-based full body home workout routine. When we think of a home workout, we assume that they’re inferior for muscle growth. For many bodyweight workout at home routines out there, this is true. But, this is simply because they aren’t designed properly. You can make comparable gains in muscle mass by using either lighter loads (like bodyweight exercises), or heavier weights in the gym. But there are a couple key points that people overlook when it comes to home full body workout routines.
First off, is that you need to push to near failure for every single set you perform in this full body home workout routine. If you stop well short of failure during your sets then you’ll fail to fully activate all the motor units within your muscles. And you won’t experience the same amount of growth that you would when using heavy weights. Secondly, you need to be working with a weight or resistance that is at least 30-40% of your 1 rep max if you want to maximize growth. So 30-40% of your 1 rep max equates to around 30-40 reps per set. So, make sure you can’t do more than that for the following exercises.
All that said, we’re now ready to dive into the full home workout. The first exercise we’ll use here are narrow grip push-ups with the hands placed in a diamond shape, which will be used to target the chest and triceps. Next, we’ll use the inverted row to target our overall back with most of the emphasis on the mid back for thickness. Then, the third exercise is pike push-ups, which mainly target the shoulders and triceps. Now, it’s time to target the back, primarily the lats, with a vertical pulling angle through the sliding lat pulldowns.
The fifth of the bodyweight exercises is the bicep towel curls, which allows for arms isolation. Then, to target the long head of the triceps, you can simply switch over and perform tricep extensions in your setup for the bicep curls. For most of us, bodyweight squats just aren’t going to cut it. Which is why we’ll use the towel set up again to perform assisted pistol squats to target the quads and glutes. For the eighth exercise, we’ll move onto the Bulgarian split squat with your rear leg elevated on a platform, which will again further target the quads and glutes. Lastly, we’ll use the sliding leg curl to work the hamstrings through both hip and knee extension.
Now, as for your home workout routine, just like your exercises in the gym, it’s vital that you get adequate rest of roughly 2 minutes between each of your sets. And to do so in this workout while saving time, you can perform the following upper body exercises in a superset fashion:
Home workout (superset):
SUPERSET:
Diamond Push-Ups: (4 sets – 2 flat, 2 decline)
Inverted row (4 sets)
SUPERSET:
Pike Push-ups (3 sets)
Lat pulldowns on floor (3 sets)
SUPERSET:
Biceps towel curl: 2 sets
Tricep bodyweight extensions: 2 sets
Assisted pistol squat: 3 sets each side
Bulgarian split squat 3 sets each side
Hamstring leg curls: 4 sets
I’d recommend performing this full body home workout 3-4 times a week.
Guys I hope you enjoyed this one and I also hope you were able to see that it’s the little details like what I went through in this video that really are key to maximizing growth and to actually see progress with whatever workout routine you choose to do. And for a step-by-step program that takes care of all the guess work for you and shows you exactly how and what to work out and eat week after week so that you can fuel your body and build muscle most effectively with science, then simply take the analysis quiz to discover which science-based program would be best for you and where your body is currently at below:

Last year I was quite interested in watching art dance. I read that this was a counterreaction in Germany and America to formal ballet. Here several videos.
A short video of two Italian dancers done in New York a couple of years ago using a lot of video tricks.
This one is longer and sung to 'On a Dead Sunday Afternoon' with various clips of the group 'Aktion Kollektiva'.
Here some male dancers performing 'Nevrose'(nervous) by Cie Evrelda physical dance theatre.
I had once gone to Ujjaini
On the banks of the river Shipra
Far far away in that land of dreams
To seek the first love of my former life.
She had lodhra* powder on her face
A lotus she playfully held in her hand
She stuck buds of kunda in her ears
And kurubak flower in her hair
Her slim body she dressed in red
With a knot at her waist
Anklets gently jingled on her feet.
It was on a day in spring
To find my way I had to travel long
In that unknown land.
In the temple of Mahakal
The evening prayer bell rang
The crowded roads were now empty
The dusk was falling
And the rooftops were glowing
With the rays of setting sun.
My beloved's home
On a lonely narrow serpentine street
Was difficult to reach.
On the door was painted
A conchshell and a discus
On either side of its entrance
Grew two young mango trees
Like two beloved sons
On a white pillar at the gate
The statue of a lion stood.
Her pigeons had returned home
And on a golden bar
Her peacock had gone to sleep
With a lamp in her hand
My Malabika slowly came down.
She descended the stairs like a goddess
Holding an evening star in her hand.
The scent of flowers and her body
Fell on me like warm breaths
Her half-slipped dress
Revealed her left breast
Painted in chandan paste.
Seeing me my beloved
Put down the lamp on the stairs
And stood before me.
She held my hand
And silently asked with her anxious eyes,
'How are you, my friend?'
Looking at her I tried to reply
But no words came.
I had forgotten her language
Both of us tried hard
But failed to remember our names.
Only silent tears
Trickled down our eyes.
Sitting under the tree
We thought and thought
As a bird seeks its nest at the day's end
Her hands sought mine
Like a lotus bending on its stem
She slowly bent her head on my breast
And our warm eager breaths
Silently mingled.
In the darkness of night
Ujjaini was lost
At the gate
The lamp went out
In the temple
On the banks of Shipra
The prayers stopped.
*Lodhra is the name of a tree, the powder of its ground bark was used by women in poet Kalidasa's time for beautification. Kunda and Kurubak are names of flowers while Chandan is sandal wood

Russian lyrics

Dark eyes, burning eyes Frightful and beautiful eyes I love you so, I fear you so For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour
Dark eyes, flaming eyes They implore me into faraway lands Where love reigns, where peace reigns Where there is no suffering, where war is forbidden
Dark eyes, burning eyes Frightful and beautiful eyes I love you so, I fear you so For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour
Without meeting you, I wouldn't be suffering so I would have lived my life smiling You have ruined me, dark eyes You have taken my happiness forever away
Dark eyes, burning eyes Frightful and beautiful eyes I love you so, I fear you so For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour
I recall helping my mother with her Russian vocabulary before a test at the University f Alaska, maybe 1978, she was learning Russian, Spanish and doing teacher trainjng, trying to get back into the work force, which she had left 20 years earlier to go to Alaska with my father and have 3 kids. She loved languages and passed that on to me. My kids are trilingual German /Russian/ English due to my wife being from Russia. When my mother, already quite old was still in England, I took her old Russian university textbooks back home with me after visiting her in England. I can read some now but not speak well enough. My knowledge of Chaliapin comes from the book 'Eyewitness', which quote excerpts from memoirs in Russian. It relates a passage from his life story as dictated to his great friend Maxim Gorky, 'Pages from my Life'. In this story he arrives in Milan to sing for the first time at the Scala. There he is accosted by blackmailing 'claquers' or parasites who demand money not to boo and hiss at his performance. He is wuite worried and wants to inform the police but dcides against it. In the end his singing is so amazing that the claquers cheer him the loudest. His life story is a romantic poverty to success story as an enormous multitalent.
'Part of the romantic appeal of Shalyapin, one of the geatest Russian singers,, comds from his rise from ignoranc and poverty to the heights of creative art, world fame and success. He was born in Kazan, the one time Tartar capital on the middle Volga in 1873. His father was a copying clerk who vented his frustrations in beating members of the family anf in drinking. Hunger eventually drove his mothr to begging. At ten Shalyapin began a series of apprenticeships, none of which lasted mor than a few months because he found the tasks given him dull nd frequently not connected with learning a trade, and becsuse his willful, restless nature rebelled against thd cruel punishments he received. His formal schoolong was also fitful and ended at thirteen, hen he he successfully completed the fourth grade.
He had already been a choir boy for three years when at thirteen he saw his first play and then his first opera. From then on his life-loong passion for the stage began. He spent all the time he could with singers and actors, haunted the theater, and was often take on for mass senes and bit parts, usually without pay. Because of this his relations with his father became even more strained, and by consent he lft home at fiften, completely indeppendent, to lead a precarious existence as he sougjt to find plzce for himself in the theater. The only systdmatic voice training he received came froom D.A. Usatov, a warm hearted, retired opera singer, who gave him free lessons. An unsuccessfulnseason at the state administered Maiinsky theater in St. Petersburg in 1894-95 was followed by what became the turning point in his career:he met S.zI. Mamontov, the millionaire industrialist, sculptor and spirited avant-garde patron of the arts, who invited him to join his Mosow Private Russian Opera. Here Shalyapin ws first given free rein to flloe his artistic impulses and give shape to sevral of his memorable roles. From 1899 to 1922 at the height of his powers, he was the featured bass soloist at the Bolshoi theater in Moscow. In 1901 came the first of several successful singing tours that took him to Italy, France, England, Germanty and the United States.
His quick intelligence and energy helped overcome the numerous deficiencies in his knowledge. He was aided musiclly by his contact with such authorities as the composers Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, and Rachmaninov, who wa a conductor im Mamontov's opera and who became a close friend. The famous historian Klyuchevsky often welcomed him and expounded on the character of Boris Godunov and his contemporaries. Stasov, the venerable art historian and music critic, helped him. Ghe painters Repin, Korvin, Serov and Vrubel opened to him the world of stage design and costume. Dalsky and fedotova were among the many actors from whom he learned to act. He was accepted as an active member of the lively circle of writers that formed around Maxim Gorky and included Leonid Andreev and Ivan Bunin. Learning from all, he incorporated knowledge into his own artistic endeavours.
Shalyapin was exceptionally gifted not only in music, but in drawing and sculpture as well, and as an actor he had few equals. At times extravagant and undisciplined, given o spontaneous, impulsive actions, he was frequently the despair of his friends and the delight of jealous enemies. His performances were notable not only because of his fine voice znd superb musicianship, but also because, in a creative way he combined these with visual aspects-great acting, effective make-up, and imaginative costume-into a unified representation of a character.'
I typed this from pp. 171-2 of Eyewitness. A truly fascinatin figure. I used to practice keyboard a few years bck and Dark Eyes was in the practice book, an old gypsy song. My black haired mother on her father's side is likely of gypsy blood as I understood it, her maiden name being a standard gypsy name. Her eyes were green.
