Yellow flowers gardening tips
Meaning of yellow flowers in cultures of the past
Following up on my last spring blog entry on bird song I thought I would post about anothr joyful attribute of the season which enlivens everyone's mood and that is the blossoming of flowers. Since yellow flowers remind us of the increasing sunlight, which is the essence of the season, it is good to concentrate firstly on them. One article linked above gives gardening tips and the other goes into cultural context throughout history. Meaning is always dependent on cultural and personal context of course and shifts with time. I hope to do more blog entries on plants and animals as the season progresses. Keeping in touch with nature is important to keep in touch with ourselves as we are part of nature. The more we listen to nature the deeper we understand ourselves. Enjoy the sunshine, flowers of all sorts and birds singing on your daily walk or sit outside or just open the window to smell the fresh scents, hear the birds. The season is short like the seasons of our youth and should be enjoyed to the fullest before it so quickly pass.
Spring Poems
Sonnet 98: From you have I been absent in the spring
From you have I been absent in the spring,
When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim,
Hath put a spirit of youth in everything,
That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him.
Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smell
Of different flowers in odour and in hue,
Could make me any summer’s story tell,
Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew:
Nor did I wonder at the lily’s white,
Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose;
They were but sweet, but figures of delight
Drawn after you, – you pattern of all those.
Yet seem’d it winter still, and, you away,
As with your shadow I with these did play
