Of course lots of people are talking like this nowadays but the population has gone up nearly 20 fold in 200 years. The earth and its plant and animal life, resources are being used up, destroyed, dirtied by us. We continue on an egoistic search for economic self fulfillment. Children hinder us on the road to riches. Children used to help on the farm, where we all lived, and care for us in old age. The church provided some welfare for widows and orphans. Drunks and criminals were moral outcasts. Industrialization using fossil fuels to create mechanical slave labor multiplied wealth, eliminated work we did since the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago. Fossil fuels and things like copper, aluminum needed to run the industrial machine will run out, as will our desire to work, have babies or do anything which might hurt our oh so precious egos. If a few hundred million people remain, living off the land in perpetuity, retaining deep seated historical cultures like buddhism in East Asia and confucianism then this can only be good. What are we trying to accomplish anyway with our modernity? Nietzsche thought we were supermen but died insane. Modesty is the best policy.
